ইংরেজি ভাষায় article খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ । a/ an এবং the এরা হল article । article আসলে এক ধরণের adjective [বিশেষণ] । adjective-এর মতোই article কোনও noun [বিশেষ্য] অথবা noun-এর মতো কাজ করছে এমন কোনও word-এর আগে বসে । a-র আরেক রূপ হল an । সাধারণভাবে a বসে consonant [ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ]-এর আগে এবং an বসে vowel [স্বরবর্ণ]-এর আগে । অনির্দিষ্টভাবে কিছু বোঝাতে এদের ব্যবহার করা হয় বলে এরা পরিচিত indefinite article নামে । আর the ব্যবহার করা হয় নির্দিষ্টভাবে কিছু বোঝাতে । তাই the হল definite article । a/ an/ the-কে বাদ দিয়ে ইংরেজি ভাষায় কাজ চালানো মুশকিল ।

a/ an

a এবং an-এর ব্যবহার

অনির্দিষ্টভাবে কোনও ব্যক্তি, বস্তু অথবা শ্রেণীর কথা বোঝাতে noun -এর আগে a/ an বসে ।

• A furnished flat at $8 per week. (The Gift of the Magi, O. Henry)
• Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall / Humpty Dumpty had a great fall; (Nursery rhyme)
• A young countryman crosses swords with a scarred stranger on his way to Paris. (The Three Musketeers, Alexandre Dumas)

পরবর্তী word যদি consonant দিয়ে শুরু হয় তবে তার আগে A ব্যবহার করতে হয়, যেমন এখানে f, w, g, y, s এরা consonant [ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ] । a, e, i, o, u বাদে ইংরেজি alphabet-এর [বর্ণমালা] বাকি সব letter [বর্ণ] consonant ।

আবার এই বাক্যগুলো দেখ:

• He is an actor.
• She broke an egg.
• I am an Indian.
• Give me an orange.
• She had an umbrella in her hand.

পরের word vowel দিয়ে শুরু হলে তার আগে An বসে । a, e, i, o, u এই পাঁচটি বর্ণ হল vowel [স্বরবর্ণ] ।

• After an hour of rest he got back to work.
• Brutus is an honourable man.
• In her later life the woman emerged as an heir to a large property.

H তো consonant । তাহলে আগে an কেন ? না, ভুল নয় । আসলে এই “h” word-এর শুরুতে বসে থাকে বটে, কিন্তু কোনও সাড়াশব্দ করে না । কাজ করে পরের বর্ণটি । যেমন এখানে [h]our, [h]onourable, [h]eir । h চুপ করে আছে, কাজ করছে o, o, এবং e ।

• Mimi is an M.A.
• Dr Sen is an F.R.C.S.
• Ashok is an NDTV reporter.

M, F, N তো consonant । তাহলে আগে an কেন ? কারণ M, F, N এর sound [উচ্চারণ-ধ্বনি] em [এম], ef [এফ] এবং en [এন] । অর্থাৎ প্রথমে vowel e উচ্চারিত হয় ।

• A university.
• A useful book.
• A one-hundred-rupee note. [লক্ষ কর, এখানে a one-hundred-rupee  বলা হচ্ছে কারণ এটা noun modifier বা noun adjunct  | ‘note’ এই noun-এর আগে adjective-এর মতো বসেছে তার পরিচয় বোঝানর জন্য । আরও উদাহরণ –  three-year-old girl, two-hour journey, five-year plan । modifier এরকম একাধিক থাকলে সেগুলো hyphen-যুক্ত হয় এবং modifier noun-এর [rupee, year, hour]  plural number হয় না । তাই “rupee”, ‘’rupees’’নয় ।]

U, O এরা vowel, কিন্তু university এবং useful-এ u-এর উচ্চারণ consonant yu-এর মতো, one-এ o-র উচ্চারণ consonant w-র মতো ।

• a বসবে consonant-এর আগে এবং যেখানে vowel কাজ করে consonant-এর মতো তার আগে ।
• an বসবে vowel-এর আগে ।
• an বসবে যে word-এর প্রথম consonant-টা উচ্চারিত হয় না, কিন্তু দ্বিতীয় স্থানে একটি vowel থাকে সেই ওয়ার্ডের আগে ।
• যে word-এর প্রথম consonant letterটির উচ্চারণ তার vowel-এর মতো মূল sound [ধ্বনি] তার আগে an বসবে । যথা, m> em, s> es, l> el, ইত্যাদি । অর্থাৎ M.A. উচ্চারিত হচ্ছে em.a. এই ভাবে ।[/stextbox]

কিন্তু কেন a অথবা an দরকার ?

* যেখানে singular noun [একবচনাত্মক বিশেষ্য] আছে যা গোনা যায় [one pen, five books ইত্যাদি], যার কথা প্রথম বলা হচ্ছে এবং যার কথা কোনও ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর পরিবর্তে বলা হচ্ছে না তার আগে a/ an দরকার । যা গোনা যায় না তার আগে a এবং an-কে ব্যবহার করা যাবে না । a river বলব, কিন্তু a water নয় ।

* যেখানে কোনও singular noun বা একবচনাত্মক বিশেষ্য কোনও শ্রেণীর প্রতিনিধি তার আগে । যেমন, A cow has horns [অর্থাৎ All cows have horns]।

* কোনও complement-এর [পরিপূরক বিশেষ্য] আগে । যেমন, He is an actor । তিনি কে বা কি ? an actor [একজন অভিনেতা] ।

* কোনও সংখ্যাবাচক বিশেষ্যর আগে । যেমন, a hundred, a million, a dozen ।

* কোনও কিছুর দাম, গতি, অনুপাত ইত্যাদির হার বোঝাতে । যেমন, forty rupees a kilo, seventy kilometres an hour, four times a day ইত্যাদি ।

* কোনও রাগ, ক্ষোভ, বিস্ময়, দুঃখ প্রকাশক noun যা গোনা যায় তার আগে ।

• What a hot evening!
• What a pity!

* Mr/Mrs/Miss + surname [পদবি] অথবা পদবি সহ নাম থাকলে তার আগে । যেমন, a Mr Banerji, a Mrs Bose, a John Henry [জনৈক মিঃ ব্যানার্জি, কোনও এক মিসেস বোস, জনৈক জন হেনরি] ইত্যাদি ।

কোথায় কোথায় a/ an ব্যবহার করা যাবে না ?

* Plural noun-এর [বহুবচনাত্মক বিশেষ্য] আগে a/ an ব্যবহার করা যাবে না । a boy, a boys নয় । an hour, an hours নয় ।

* singular হলেও গোনা যায় না এমন noun-এর আগে । যেমন, water, luggage, information, advice ইত্যাদি noun-এর আগে । এক্ষেত্রে আমরা বলতে পারি some water, a piece of luggage, a piece of information/ advice ইত্যাদি ।

a/ an – এর ব্যবহারে আরেকটা জরুরি কথা ।

* যদি বলি a black and white cat, তার মানে হল একটা কালো-সাদা রঙের বেড়াল । কিন্তু যদি বলি a black and a white cat, তবে তার মানে হল, দুটো বেড়াল যাদের একটার রঙ কালো আর একটার রঙ সাদা ।

* He is a better teacher than administrator. এই sentence-এ একই ব্যক্তি সম্পর্কে বলা হচ্ছে যে তিনি প্রশাসক হিসেবে যতটা ভালো তার চেয়ে ভালো শিক্ষক হিসেবে।

* কিন্তু যদি বলি He is a better teacher than an administrator, তাহলে কথাটা দুইজন ব্যক্তি সম্পর্কে বলা হচ্ছে । এর মানে হল, অপর একজন ব্যক্তি প্রশাসক হিসেবে যতটা ভালো হতে পারেন এই ব্যক্তি শিক্ষক হিসেবে তার চেয়েও ভালো ।

a এবং one

* দুটো word-ই একটা ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে বোঝায় । কিন্তু সব সময় একটার বদলে অপরটাকে ব্যবহার করা যায় না । a tree বলতে যে-কোনও একটা গাছ বোঝায়, কোনও নির্দিষ্ট গাছ নয় । কিন্তু one tree বললে বোঝাবে একটাই গাছ, তার বেশি নয় ।

* a/ an- কে pronoun [সর্বনাম] হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা যায় না, কিন্তু one-কে pronoun হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা যায় । আমরা বলতে পারি One of the boys fell ill, কিন্তু A of the boys… নয় ।

* কোনও নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে কোনও ঘটনা ঘটেছে এমন বোঝাতে day, week, month ইত্যাদির আগে one ব্যবহার করা হয়, a/ an নয় ।

• One day I went to see him.
• One night a stranger came to my house.

The নিয়ে আলোচনা

* যখন নির্দিষ্টভাবে কোনও ব্যক্তি, বস্ত অথবা শ্রেণীর কথা বলা হয় তখন সেই নির্দিষ্ট noun-এর অথবা noun-এর মতো কাজ করে এমন word-এর আগে the বসে । singular noun অথবা plural noun সব ক্ষেত্রেই the ব্যবহার করা হয় ।

• I saw the man in the street.
• The men were dressed in black.
• “Why does the lamb love Mary so?” (Nursery rhyme)

* যেকোনো gender [লিঙ্গ]- এর আগে the বসতে পারে ।

• The girl is going to shop.
• The boy stood first in the class.

* যা একটাই আছে অথবা একটাই আছে বলে মনে করা হয় তাদের নামের আগে the বসে ।

• The earth moves round the sun.
• The sky was clear this morning.
• The Pope retired this month.

* যে noun-এর কথা আগে বলা হয়েছে তার কথা পরে আবার বলা হলে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই সেটাকে নির্দিষ্টভাবে উল্লেখ করা হয় ।

• I lost my pen today ; now I see the pen in your pocket.

* কোনও শব্দসমষ্টি অথবা বাক্যাংশের সাহায্যে কোনও noun-কে নির্দিষ্ট করা হলে তার আগে the বসবে ।

• This is the man I saw in the metro.
• I know the place where the murder was committed.
• The girl in violet will dance now.

* আগেই জানা আছে এমন কোনও নির্দিষ্ট noun সম্পর্কে বলতে হলে সেই nounএর আগে the দরকার ।

• The girl is standing in the balcony. [এই বাড়ির ব্যালকনি]
• Please pass the salt. [ টেবিলে যে লবণ আছে সেটা]
• Go to the doctor. [যে ডাক্তারকে দেখান হয় তার কাছে]

* সমগ্র শ্রেণীর প্রতিনিধিত্ব করছে এমন noun-এর আগে the থাকবে ।

• The camel is a gentle animal. [ all camels ]
• The dog is a tame animal. [all dogs]
• The kidney maintains proper water and electrolyte balance. [kidneys]

* musical instrument-এর নামের আগে the বসবে ।

• Amjad Ali Khan, Indian classical musician, plays the sarod. [any sarod]
• My sister is learning the sitar. [any sitar]
• The violin is a stringed instrument. [any violin]

* সর্বাপেক্ষা ভালো, খারাপ, সুন্দর ইত্যাদি বোঝাতে যেসব adjective [বিশেষণ] ব্যবহার করা হয় [superlative degree] তাদের আগে the বসে ।

• This is the oldest tree in this forest.
• This is the best Chinese food I have ever had.
• This is the worst accident I have ever seen.

* only-র আগে the বসে ।

• I am the only son of my parents.
• He is the only doctor in this village.

* দ্বীপপুঞ্জ, পর্বতমালা, সমুদ্র, নদী এবং যেসব দেশের নামের সঙ্গে republic, states, kingdom যুক্ত থাকে তাদের নামের আগে the বসে ।

• The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of Indian islands close to Southeast Asia.
• The Karakorum is one of the largest mountain ranges in Asia.
• The Indian Ocean’s average depth is 12,990 feet.
• The Ganges is the most sacred river to the Hindus.
• Utah is the 45th state of the United States of America.
• The Republic of Congo is in Central Africa.
• The kingdom of Spain has the twelfth largest economy in the world.

* ধর্মগ্রন্থ ও মহাকাব্যের নামের আগে the ব্যবহার করা হয়য় ঃ

• The Mahabharata is the longest epic of ancient India.
• The Ramayana , a major Sanskrit epic, has a great influence on Indian life and culture.
• The Gita has seven hundred verses.
• The Bible was first printed around 1454 C.E.
• The Quran is the sacred book of Islam.

* ইংরেজি সংবাদপত্রের নামের আগে সাধারণত the বসে ।

• The Economic Times is published by Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd.
• The Statesman, a leading English newspaper in West Bengal, was founded in 1875.
• The Times was first published in London in 1785.
• The Telegraph is the largest circulated English daily published from Kolkata.

* কোনও কোনও adjective শ্রেণীবাচক বিশেষ্যর মতো ব্যবহৃত হয় যেমন dead, poor, rich, disabled, old, middle-aged, young ইত্যাদি । এদের আগে the বসে ।

• The volunteers arranged funerals of the dead.
• “You don’t make the poor richer by making the rich poorer.”- Winston Churchill
• These seats in the front row are reserved for the disabled.
• “The old believe everything, the middle-aged suspect everything, the young know everything.” – Oscar Wilde

* বিখ্যাত বাড়ি, অট্টালিকা, অট্টালিকা সমষ্টি, শিল্পকর্ম -এর আগে সাধারণত the বসে ।

• The Tower of London was founded in the late 11th century. .
• The Taj Mahal, built between 1632 and 1653, is a great example of Mughal architecture.
• The Victoria Memorial was designed by William Emerson and Vincent Esch.
• Two paintings of the same name, the Madonna of the Rocks, are the great works of Leonardo da Vinci.

* কোনও সংগঠনের নামের আগে the বসে ।

• The SAARC [South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation] is an organization of South Asian nations of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan, Nepal, Afghanistan and India.
• The United Nations has 193 member states.

* বিখ্যাত পুরস্কারের নামের আগে the বসে ।

• The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, were first given in 1929.
• The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest award in cinema.
• Rabindranath Thakur [Tagore] was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913.

* সাধারণত proper noun-এর আগে the বসে না । যেখানে proper noun [নামবাচক বিশেষ্য] common noun-এর [জাতিবাচক বিশেষ্য] মতো কাজ করে সেখানে তার আগে the বসে ।

• Dr Sen is an F.R.C.S. কিন্তু The Dr Sen who lives down the lane is an F.R.C.S.
• Harun fled the country. কিন্তু This is The Harun who fled the country.
• Once Howrah was called the Sheffield of India.

Dr Sen, Harun, Sheffield ইত্যাদি proper noun-এর আগে the না বসলেও এই sentenceগুলোতে তাদের আগে the বসার কারণ হল বোঝা যাচ্ছে যে Dr Sen, Harun একাধিক আছে এবং Howrah যেন আরেকটা Sheffield |

* কোনও পরিবার/ বংশকে সামগ্রিকভাবে বোঝাতে পারিবারিক নাম বা পদবির আগে the বসে ।

• The Melvilles kept a beautiful house and garden, but you couldn’t say the same for the Johnsons. (the Melville family and the Johnson family). [Over the Wall by Ruskin Bond ]
• The Birlas settled in Calcutta in 1861. [the Birla family]
• This property belongs to the Chatterjees. [the Chatterjee family]

* নিচের দুটি sentence লক্ষ কর ঃ

• The playwright and critic is present here.
• The playwright and the critic are present here.

প্রথম sentence-এ the দুটি noun-এর আগে একবার ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে কারণ একই ব্যক্তি playwright এবং critic । কিন্তু দ্বিতীয় sentence-এ দুটি noun-এর আগে আলাদাভাবে দুটি the বসেছে কারণ এখানে playwright এবং critic দুজন আলাদা ব্যক্তি ।

* a/ an/ the নিয়ে ওপরে যে আলোচনা করা হল তার মূল কথা হল অনির্দিষ্টভাবে কোনও noun-এর কথা বলা হলে সেই noun-এর আগে a/ an বসে এবং যখন নির্দিষ্টভাবে কোনও noun-এর কথা বলা হয় তখন তার আগে the বসে ।
